Wilmington, DE – Ronald M. Allen, founder of Managing Life's Changes, has played a key role in supporting the McKinsey Social Initiative's Generation program, a global workforce development initiative designed to close the skills gap for young people. Through his contract work with Generation, Allen focused on building and nurturing relationships with employers to create meaningful job placement opportunities for program graduates.
MEETING CLIENTS WHERE THEY ARE
Allen's approach to employer engagement centered on understanding the unique needs and values of each potential partner organization. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all strategy, he invested time in learning what mattered most to employers and tailored his outreach accordingly.
"We contracted Ronald's services to build relationships with employers who would interview and hire those graduates, and he helped us significantly," said program leadership. "In particular, Ronald created new relationships and invested in those relationships consistently. He approached this work strategically, understood what was of value to our potential partners, and represented us professionally. Thanks to his efforts, we will likely be able to place many graduates in the future."
STRATEGIC EMPLOYER ENGAGEMENT
Allen's work with Generation demonstrates the critical importance of authentic relationship-building in workforce development. By representing the program professionally and strategically, he helped bridge the gap between talented graduates seeking opportunities and employers seeking qualified candidates.
His efforts align with Generation's core mission: preparing disconnected young adults for meaningful careers and connecting them with employers who recognize their potential. The program has achieved remarkable results, including 100 percent of early cohorts receiving job offers by graduation day and employers reporting that Generation graduates outperform their peers in key areas such as patient care, customer service, and professionalism.
ABOUT THE GENERATION PROGRAM
Generation is the first program of the McKinsey Social Initiative, a nonprofit founded by McKinsey & Company in 2014 to apply the organization's problem-solving expertise to complex social challenges. The program addresses youth unemployment by providing intensive training, mentoring, and support to help young people launch careers in high-demand fields.
Since its launch, Generation has expanded to multiple countries and trained thousands of young people in sectors including healthcare, retail, customer service, and technology. The program's rigorous approach includes:
Intensive 8-12 week training programs tailored to specific professions
Mindset and behavioral skills coaching alongside technical training
Employer partnerships that ensure curriculum relevance and job placement
Long-term support for graduates during their first months on the job
Results have been impressive: Generation graduates consistently outperform peers, with higher retention rates, stronger performance evaluations, and greater long-term career success. In healthcare cohorts, for example, 90 percent of graduates passed state certification exams compared to a 50 percent national average.
BUILDING LASTING CONNECTIONS
Allen's contribution to Generation exemplifies the program's commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement. By establishing and nurturing employer relationships, he helped create pathways for graduates that extend beyond initial job placement into sustainable career trajectories.
